Letter to the Editor: Global poverty can affect us in Decorah

Dear Editor, As a proud Decorah resident, I feel it is our collective responsibility to not only care for our town but also to provide compassion and assistance to others suffering hardships far outside our city lines. It is critical to recognize our involvement in tackling global challenges such as poverty, and how they can influence us even here in Iowa. I am writing as an advocate for The Borgen Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting global poverty. Our organization works relentlessly to engage Congresspeople in support of policies that can have a substantial influence on decreasing poverty globally. One might question why this is important in Decorah or Iowa, where we are reasonably safe from extreme poverty. The truth is that because our world is so intertwined, global poverty has far-reaching implications, even in our calm corner of the country. Supporting measures aimed at eliminating global poverty, for example, can lead to greater economic stability and global security. As a result, the interests of the United States and its residents, including those of Decorah, are better protected. Furthermore, through pushing for global poverty reduction, we defend the ideals of compassion, fairness, and solidarity that are central to the spirit of our community. As a result, I urge my fellow Decorah citizens to join me in supporting The Borgen Project's efforts to reduce worldwide poverty by contacting our political officials. We can ensure that Decorah remains a beacon of love and empathy not only within our city limits but also around the world by doing so. Thank you for bringing this critical problem to our attention, and I hope to see our community band together to make a difference on a worldwide scale.
