DECORAH -- In a community-driven initiative, Decorah residents have effectively tackled the invasive garlic mustard plant, a threat to local biodiversity. Friends of Decorah Parks has significantly reduced the presence of this troublesome weed in various park areas. Garlic mustard, known for its distinctive garlic scent when its leaves are crushed, poses a serious risk to native plant species. Its proliferative seed production and ability to remain viable in the soil for extended periods allow it to dominate forest floors, stifling the growth of indigenous plants. "In our Decorah parks, the effort of many has made a huge difference and we have overcome it in many places, but we need to continue our work," said Mary Lewis of Friends of Decorah Parks. "Also good news, it is easy to pull, and satisfying to see your progress." Garlic mustard follows a two-year growth cycle, germinating in the first year and flowering in the subsequent spring. Despite its resilience, manual removal methods have proven effective, offering volunteers a sense of accomplishment. To equip the community in combating garlic mustard, Friends of Decorah Parks is hosting educational sessions on identification, reporting, and eradication techniques. These sessions will take place at the following locations in April: Dunning's Spring Parking Lot: Saturday, April 13, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Van Peenan Parking Lot: Saturday, April 20, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants are urged to arrive promptly at 10:30 a.m. for instructions. Gloves will be provided, and additional hand diggers and hoes are appreciated. For those unable to attend, opportunities for involvement in other parks or adopting a plot for maintenance are available.
