Parklets Promise to Expand Downtown Businesses

DECORAH — The City of Decorah is now accepting applications from business owners in downtown Decorah who would enjoy being a steward of a parklet structure for the warm season. Only two parklets are available. According to National Association of City Transportation Officials, "Parklets are public seating platforms that convert curbside parking spaces into vibrant community spaces. Also known as street seats or curbside seating, parklets are the product of a partnership between the city and local businesses, residents or neighborhood associations. Most parklets have a distinctive design that incorporates seating, greenery, and bike racks. They often accommodate unmet demands for public space on thriving neighborhood retail streets or commercial areas." The City of Decorah is running this program to model other communities in Iowa, who have featured safe and attractive options to increase outdoor gathering spaces in their downtown business districts. Downtown Decorah Betterment has been an advocate and partner for this effort, with Decorah's Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District (SSMID) allocating dollars to match a state grant secured by Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce. The parklets arose from individual business owners who expressed interest, gave feedback and attended informational sessions to learn more. All parklets are crash test rated to ensure public safety.
