Decorah Man Honored for Lifetime in Volunteerism

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Decorah's Harold Spilde has won the 2024 Paris Gibson Award. The award, which is regional to Spilde's current residence of Great Falls, Montana, is exemplified by the vision and excellence of Great Falls founder, Paris Gibson. The City of Great Falls, Montana said in a news release that previous winners of the award chose Spilde from the list of nominees. Spilde was born and raised in Decorah, Iowa. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Upon leaving the Air Force, Spilde made Great Falls his home. While working at the Montana Department of Transportation, Spilde embarked on his lifetime passion of volunteering and service. In 1993, he began volunteering with FISH, an organization made up of members of 12 churches and 1 service group. FISH serves Great Falls as an emergency source of food for those in need. During his time with FISH Spilde served as president, and volunteered five days a week for roughly four hours a day. As part of his award, Spilde will receive a $500 check provided by Jimmy and Debbie Filipowicz of Steel Etc., which may be given to a charity of his choice; a tree will also be planted in his honor, along with a granite marker and a plaque donated by local businesses. Additional prizes include dinner for two and a ride in a 1918 Model T Ford at the Great Falls Independence Day Parade. Stay ahead of the curve!
