BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: Aries Sun Studio

DECORAH — Born during the height of the pandemic, Aries Sun Studio is dedicated to crafting brand and web designs that not only resonate deeply with audiences but also reflect the true essence of clients' unique journeys and visions. Owner Aly Poepke, needing a creative outlet beyond a corporate job, went full-time with Aries Sun Studio after moving to Decorah in the summer of 2021. Since then, she has continued to evolve and grow, reflecting her passion and dedication as a brand and web designer through her offerings of brand strategy, brand identity design, custom website design, brand collateral (business cards, flyers, stationary, social media templates, pitch decks, merchandise design) and more. DecorahNews.com got to know Poepke and her experience with Aries Sun Studio. DN: What is your background, and how did you develop your skill set? AP: My very first introduction to digital design was in AutoCAD classes at Appleton West High School in Appleton, WI. I was so enamored with the idea that I could create something entirely out of lines and pixels. I studied Media Production at University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, which gave me a great appreciation for photography, film and marketing. Though my current skillset developed from these core studies, I am, for the most part, self-taught in graphic and web design. I am lucky to love what I do, because I get to practice and improve my skills every day. DN: What was your first job ever? AP: My first "real" job was at Orange Julius making smoothies! I was 15 at the time and saving up for a trip to Germany through an exchange program at my school. DN: Tell us how you market your business to grow sales. AP: My current marketing strategy is mainly on social media platforms, like Instagram and Pinterest, through website SEO, and by word-of-mouth from past clients and industry connections. DN: What is the best thing a customer ever said about your business? AP: I think back to this part of a client testimonial often: "I really felt like she was looking out for me, as if it were her own business." I always aim to nurture my clients with the same love and intention that they have for their business and work. DN: What has been the biggest challenge that you were able to solve? How did you do it? AP: As a true introvert, one of my biggest challenges was communicating confidently and effectively with new potential clients. At the beginning of my business, this was tough. But with lots of practice and building my confidence, it comes a lot more naturally now. DN: What inspires you to get out of bed every morning? AP: The opportunity to help small business owners find clarity and confidence in their brand. I love seeing the transformation that happens when my clients embrace their true selves and connect effortlessly with their audience. Knowing that I can use my design skills and unique perspective to bring joy and authenticity into their businesses drives me every day. DN: What is the best business advice you've ever received? AP: People buy from people. The more personal and connected your business is, the better your chances of building lasting relationships with your clients/audience. When you infuse your brand with authenticity and empathy, you create a sense of trust and familiarity that resonates deeply with the people you serve. This personal touch not only sets you apart from the competition, but also fosters a loyal customer base that feels genuinely valued and understood. DN: What are the one or two things within your business that you need to improve upon over the next 12 months? AP: I could definitely benefit from a consistent content creation schedule - that's something that always falls to the back burner when things get busy! DN: What interesting fact about your business don't most people know? AP: Most people don't know my passion for human design. I love incorporating it into brand strategy sessions when it's appropriate and if the client is interested. DN: What is your favorite book? AP: "Just Kids" by Patti Smith. DN: What is your favorite genre of music or favorite musical group? AP: My music taste ranges mainly from classic rock and blues to Taylor Swift and Chappel Roan. My top artists right now are Led Zeppelin, Lana del Rey, Taylor Swift, and Fleetwood Mac. DN: Of all the places to which you've traveled, what has been your favorite, and why? AP: I had the opportunity to visit the Scottish Highlands for a few days during a photography internship in London, England. Everything about it—the history, the landscape, the culture—was absolutely stunning and unforgettable. DN: When you're not working, what is your favorite thing to do? AP: I love exploring Decorah's parks and trails, enjoying a great meal or drink downtown, and going thrifting for unique finds. DN: What one bit of advice would you give to a young person looking to get started in operating their own business? AP: Show your face and personality as much as you can - even if you're shy! I still struggle with this, so I know what a challenge it can be, but it makes the biggest difference in your ability to connect with your customers.
