Local Restaurateurs Recognized In Iowa Restaurant Association's '40 Women to Watch'

DECORAH — Local restaurateurs Brittany Todd and Kim Carlson Bonnet have been recognized in the 2024 Iowa Restaurant Association (IRA) class of "40 Women to Watch" in Iowa's hospitality industry. In its sixth annual class of honorees, the IRA features 40 remarkable women from across the state, each of whom has been nominated by industry peers or the public and selected by the IRA for their outstanding commitment to their customers, teams, and businesses. The honorees represent a broad spectrum of roles and experiences within the industry. Brittany Todd, owner of Mill Street Mocha for the past year, prioritizes re-framing industry stereotypes. "I firmly believe it's time we flip the script when it comes to telling kids what success looks like when they grow up," Todd asserts. "It's OK to 'flip burgers' and 'make fancy drinks' as a stepping stone in life, and it's OK to do that for your entire career. Just as long as you love where you're at. Don't settle. Life is too short for that." After a successful decade-long career as a professional photographer, Todd transitioned to the service industry, where she discovered a passion for connecting with people. "Over the past year [with Mill Street Mocha] I've gotten to experience firsthand the importance of having an incredibly knowledgeable team of people cheering you on as you start something new," Todd expressed. "It was those resources, the knowledge, and the incredible network constantly in arms reach that led me here. What an honor." Kim Carlson Bonnet, co-owner of Rubaiyat restaurant, has extensive experience in the restaurant industry. Bonnet has played every role possible within a restaurant, reflecting her deep dedication to the industry and to her community. "This is my 30th year in hospitality and I'm honored to be a part of the '40 Women to Watch,'" Bonnet said. "I get to do my job. I want to do my job. There isn't a mentality that I 'HAVE' to do a job. I am dedicated to Rubaiyat, my community, staff, and family." Known for her warm hospitality and unwavering presence, Bonnet values the connections she fosters with her guests. "I am fulfilled by being a person people look to for support and as someone who will always be there," Bonnet said. "I am present every day. I want my guests to know how much I appreciate them. I give a lot of hugs." The honorees will be formally recognized at the IRA's annual Celebrating Excellence Awards Ceremony on November 18, held in conjunction with the Iowa Hospitality Showcase.
