Decorah Football Continues Winning Streak Despite Crestwood Comeback

DECORAH — The Decorah Vikings held off a determined Crestwood team to secure a 28-21 victory on Friday, September 13, 2024, and remain undefeated so far this season. After a scoreless first quarter, Decorah regained control in the second, scoring all 28 of their points. Junior running back Trevor Kuennen led the offense with 134 rushing yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. Senior quarterback Louis Bucksa threw for 98 yards and two touchdowns, including a 10-yard pass to junior receiver Will Larson. Crestwood fought back, with senior quarterback Aidan Skoda passing for 78 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 117 yards and another score. Skoda later connected with sophomore Nathan Mahr for a 20-yard touchdown. Crestwood's late-game surge included a fourth-quarter touchdown and a successful two-point conversion to pull within a touchdown.Decorah's defense, despite giving up 163 rushing yards to Crestwood, made crucial stops in the final minutes. These end-game efforts helped the Viking cement their win. "Our defense played well for the majority of the game, but we need to be more consistent in our execution offensively," Decorah head coach Michael Tangen shared. "We gave up too many explosive plays on defense and special teams, but those are things we're capable of correcting." "I'm proud of our kids and the way we competed," Tangen added.
