MARION, Iowa — The Decorah football team continues to evolve their explosive playmaking, evidenced by an astounding 57-14 victory over Marion at Marion High School on Friday night. The team slow saw start, with Decorah's offense erupting around the second quarter of the game. But once the Vikings' offense got rolling, Marion struggled to respond. "Our kids did a great job of being patient and sticking together during the first quarter of the game," said Coach Michael Tangen of the game's pace. "Marion came out and was extremely aggressive and physical on defense. They are very good on that side of the ball." Following three punts in the first quarter, Decorah finally broke the stalemate with a long 57-yard touchdown pass from Louis Bucksa. This play sparked a 36-point second quarter for the Vikings, with the offense clicking on all cylinders and the defense stifling Marion's attack. "Our defense and special teams were outstanding all night, and once we got our offense going, good things started to happen," Coach Tangen added. Bucksa was instrumental in leading the offensive surge, contributing both through the air and on the ground. Decorah's defense, led by standout performances from players like Tommy Sexton, forced turnovers and shut down their offensive efforts. Marion managed to find the end zone once in the second quarter and again late in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to match Decorah's well-rounded performance. "I am really proud of our group and the team that we are becoming," said Tangen. "The results are great, but I am more excited about how we have been preparing during the week and the way our guys care about each other and play for each other."
