Brew Up Support for NICC Students in Crisis at the Annual Halloween Spook-tacular

CALMAR & PEOSTA, Iowa — The Northeast Iowa Community College Calmar and Peosta campuses will host the 18th Annual Kathryn J. Davis Student Crisis Fundraiser. The "Halloween Spook-tacular" will be held on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The public and members of the media are invited to attend, with proceeds going directly to the cause. The annual event provides financial support for the Kathryn J. Davis Student Crisis Fund, which was established as emergency aid for students with an immediate crisis that threatens their ability to attend class or progress in their coursework. Currently enrolled students who have school-related expenses are eligible for assistance. Through a variety of fundraising efforts—a soup and dessert bake-off, pumpkin decorating contest, and a virtual silent auction—the event raises between $8-10,000 annually. Soup and dessert bar samples are $4 for students and $6 for NICC faculty, staff and community members. Last year, the Student Crisis Fundraiser raised $8,566 district-wide and assisted 24 NICC students experiencing a crisis. Event organizers report that the college has received 28 requests for assistance since the start of the academic year. At the Peosta campus event, there will be live music performed. The events will be held at the Student Center Cougar Cafe at the Calmar campus and the Main Building Atrium at the Peosta campus, respectively. Never a dull moment!
