No Support Needed: Decorah Schools Prove Excellence in 2024 ESSA Report

DECORAH — The 2024 Iowa School Performance Summary, released by the Iowa Department of Education, reveals that the Decorah Community School District (DCSD) continues to perform consistently above average across a range of academic and extracurricular measures. None of the district's schools are in need of support under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), signaling a strong educational foundation for students across the district. The ESSA, reauthorized in December 2015, requires each state to submit a plan aimed at addressing components such as equitable access to education, high academic standards, and the closing of achievement gaps among diverse student groups. These include students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged students, racial and ethnic minorities, English learners, and others facing unique challenges, such as those from military families or those who are homeless or in foster care. The 2024 school performance report reflects the success of the DCSD, which has earned high ratings across multiple performance categories. The ESSA performance ratings offer an overview of school success by calculating a comprehensive score based on a variety of measures, including student achievement, growth, and closing achievement gaps. The summary also identifies schools needing support due to under-performance among student groups. Decorah High School (DHS) achieved an overall score of 603.95 out of 900, earning the "commendable" rating with a performance percentage of 67.11%. This is notably above the state average of 60.95%. Both Decorah Middle School (DMS) and Carrie Lee Elementary received "commendable" and "high-performing" designations, respectively. DMS scored 454.72 out of 700 (64.96%), while Carrie Lee Elementary earned 503.61 out of 700 (71.94%). John Cline Elementary, though lacking enough data to generate an independent score, was assigned the same "high performing" rating as Carrie Lee, based on an average score from similar schools in the district. This resulted in a score of 503.61 out of 700 (71.94%), reinforcing the district's consistent excellence. Dr. Tim Cronin, DCSD superintendent, shared his thoughts on the district's success, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach. "There is no single program or initiative that guarantees success; rather, it is the combination of high expectations, dedicated staff, personalized learning, extracurricular engagement, and community involvement that creates an environment where students thrive," he said. "The consistency with which we uphold these values across all areas of the school district ensures that each student has the opportunity to succeed, both academically and personally." Dr. Cronin further explained that while performance metrics like the ESSA summary provide useful data, they are just one piece of the district's broader efforts. "We'll take a thoughtful, balanced approach by considering areas where we may be falling short, identifying trends or gaps, and addressing them strategically without allowing any single metric to define our focus," he said. Attendance has been a particular focus this year, especially with new state legislation, and the district continues to foster strong participation in college credit classes and workplace learning opportunities at the high school level. The strong academic performance of Decorah's schools is complemented and enhanced by a range of award-winning programs. "The breadth of extracurricular activities, whether through athletics, the arts, or academic clubs, gives students numerous ways to connect with the school community, further enhancing their sense of belonging and motivation," Dr. Cronin states. With the strong performance shown in this year's report, DCSD remains a model of educational excellence, with no schools needing ESSA support, further cementing its reputation as one of the top-performing districts in Iowa.
