The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library Prepares for 15th Annual Old World Christmas Market

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Experience the magic of the holiday season at the Old World Christmas Market (OWCM), hosted by the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library (NCSML). On December 7 and 8, NCSML will transform into a festive celebration of Czech and Slovak culture with activities, food, and entertainment for all ages. Admission is free for the entire weekend, including access to all museum exhibits. Highlights of the Old World Christmas Market include: Family-Friendly Crafts: Hands-on activities to engage children and adults alike. Free Museum Access: Explore both permanent and traveling exhibits. Culinary Tastes with Chef Tom: Savor traditional Czech and Slovak cuisine from 12–6 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m.–4 p.m. on Sunday. Full bars will also be available for holiday refreshments. Live Entertainment: Music and performances throughout the weekend. Wreath Raffle: Sponsored by the Czech Heritage Foundation, with winners drawn on Sunday at 3 p.m. Cookie Walk: Join on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. until noon, or as long as supplies last. Kolache Café and Ornament Sale Shopping: Browse local vendors offering handcrafted gifts, unique treats, and more. This year's market will showcase vendors such as CR Beads, Myrtle Tyrtle Creation, and Pickle Creek Herbs, with more to be announced. Holiday Magic in the Grand HallThe Grand Hall at NCSML sets the stage with a 16-foot-tall Christmas tree adorned with over 1,500 hand-made ornaments that reflect the Christian, Czech, and Slovak folklore traditions. Explore the Museum's TreasuresTake advantage of free access to all NCSML galleries, including the National Collection Exhibit, featuring Czech and Slovak artifacts like a rare fish scale kroj, an original Andy Warhol silkscreen, and stunning garnet jewelry. Also, explore the Contemporary Takes on Folk Motifs exhibit, where centuries-old Moravian folk art patterns are reimagined in bold, modern designs.
