Lefse Lodge Kafe Opens in Decorah, Bringing "A Lil Bit of Norway"

DECORAH — The familiar space that previously housed Java John's Coffee House is now home to a fresh new destination for locals and visitors alike—Lefse Lodge Kafe. Officially opening its doors on Monday, December 2, the cafe is a dream come true for owners Cheryl Haggerty and Rodney "Flash" Flaskerud, who have turned their passion for Norwegian cuisine into a welcoming retirement venture. Lefse Lodge Kafe currently offers a limited menu featuring beloved Norwegian treats, including lefse, kringla, and rømmegrøt. As the cafe grows, they plan to add even more favorites, such as krumkake, rosettes, and sandbakkels. In addition to the traditional sweets, guests can enjoy other freshly baked goods, coffee, breakfast dishes and lunch options, all crafted with care. After a successful reception from the farmers market, the couple decided to take the plunge and lease a larger space. "We thought we'd be open in two weeks, but ended up taking three months—but that's okay," Cheryl said. "We've had a lot of help and it's turning out how we want it. Our team has been great about coming together, trying ideas, and seeing what works. We're really excited and proud of getting it open. It's what we wanted." A feature of the Kafe is a large display window that allows customers to peek into the kitchen and watch lefse demonstrations and other treats being prepared. "We were going to add plexiglass to the window, but Rod said, 'If I can't talk to people, I don't want it,'" Cheryl laughed. The new cafe is already receiving a warm welcome, especially among long-time locals. A group of women from the Decorah High School Class of 1961 has gathered every Wednesday morning at this location for the past 20 years, and they are thrilled with the Kafe's new feel. "We love the Norwegian roots, and the lefse is A+," they agreed. With the holiday season upon us, Lefse Lodge Kafe is already seeing an influx of preorders, and Cheryl is hopeful the community will embrace the Nordic ambiance the cafe aims to provide. "We want the community to have that lighthearted Nordic feel," she said. "It's the perfect time to open, just in time for the holidays." As the first week of business unfolds, Cheryl and Rod are full of gratitude for their supportive team and the warm reception from visitors thus far.
