The Holiday Open House at the Porter House Museum Celebrates History, Art, and Cheer

DECORAH — On December 7, the Porter House Museum hosted a festive "Holiday Open House," inviting visitors to experience the historic home in its holiday splendor. From 1 to 4 p.m., guests had the special opportunity to explore the charm of the Porters' residence, enjoy live music, and indulge in holiday treats—all free of charge. Guests were invited to tour the beautiful Victorian home of Adelbert Field Porter and Grace Young Porter, now a museum filled with fascinating collections. The museum's holiday decorations provided an especially elegant atmosphere. Visitors admired the historic furnishings and artwork that reflect the Porters' love of nature and the arts. David Faldet, President of the Porter House Museum Board of Directors, spoke about the significance of the event and the history behind the home. "Mr. Porter had a lifelong passion for collecting butterflies and moths," Faldet said. "He traveled the world in search of exotic insects, and to commemorate that passion, we have a Christmas tree adorned with moths and butterflies. It's a unique touch that reflects the spirit of Mr. Porter's work as a naturalist and collector." The Porter House, one of the earliest and most visually striking homes in Decorah's first historic district, provided the perfect setting for this holiday event. The house itself is an integral part of the experience, allowing visitors to imagine how the Porters might have decorated their home during the holidays. "The Porter House is a wonderful place to connect with history," Faldet added. "I'm thrilled that we can share the Porters' legacy and show how the house might have looked when they lived here. It's such a privilege to be part of preserving this history and offering the public a chance to experience it."
