Travel-Generated Expenditures Top $7 Billion in Iowa for First Time

DECORAH — The Iowa Tourism Office released new data showing tourism-related expenditures in the state reached $7.3 billion in 2023, a 5.1% increase over 2022. Travel-generated expenditures in Winneshiek County totaled $45.86 million, an increase of 7.2% over 2022. Additional data from the Tourism Economics study shows travel-generated state and local tax receipts at $1.1 billion. Tourism in Iowa also supported 70,954 jobs. Winneshiek County Development and Tourism Director Stephanie Fromm adds, "Visitor spending doesn't just support locally-owned businesses across Winneshiek County—it is a reflection of our communities and highlights that we are a top destination for travelers, whether they're coming from nearby [or] across the country." Alyssa Ritter, Marketing and Community Engagement Specialist with Visit Decorah, echoes Fromm's sentiment by adding, "Tourism is alive and well in Decorah, Winneshiek County, and all across the state of Iowa, producing real, impactful economic results for our communities.
