Smock Appointed Treasurer; Board Defends Decision Against Criticism

DECORAH — The Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors appointed Tim Smock as the new County Treasurer Monday, following a nomination by Shirley Vermace and a second by Mark Faldet. Smock's appointment, finalized by a majority vote, fills the role left vacant by former treasurer Brenda Kreitzer. The decision was not without contention. Supervisor Steve Kelsay voiced opposition, citing concerns over the lack of an open interview process for the position. "I believe this is disingenuous by making a staff decision for an elected office rather than putting it out for a regular interview process," Kelsay said during the meeting. Others defended the appointment, emphasizing Smock's qualifications and tenure in the treasurer's office. "[Smock] has proven to be a good candidate and has good knowledge," Supervisor Faldet noted. With Smock officially assuming the role, the board also approved his nominations for Deputy Treasurers: Stacy Darling, Amanda Humple, Nathan Onsager and Rebecca Steines. These appointments were confirmed unanimously. Smock expressed gratitude for the Board's support. "I look forward to serving the residents of Winneshiek County and working with this team to ensure efficient operations in the Treasurer's Office," he said.
