Arctic Blast to Hit Region This Weekend

As Arctic air moves into the region this weekend, Winneshiek County residents are being urged to prepare for a prolonged period of frigid temperatures, which are expected to last from Sunday through at least Tuesday. Sean Snyder, the county's Emergency Management Coordinator, urges the public to stay vigilant and to make safety a top priority. Extreme Cold, Dangerous Wind Chills ExpectedAccording to the National Weather Service, the region will experience subzero temperatures that, combined with wind gusts, will create wind chills that could approach life-threatening levels. "Frostbite can set in very quickly in these conditions, especially during times of extreme wind chill," Snyder emphasized. "Wear multiple layers of clothing and limit your time outdoors during this cold stretch." To help residents stay informed and safe, Snyder highlighted some key resources available for those living in Winneshiek County. These include the "Ready Winneshiek County" app, a free tool available for both Android and Apple devices that provides real-time updates on weather conditions, emergency alerts and local resources. It's highly recommended for everyone to have this app downloaded on their phones. Additional resources include the Alert Iowa System, another valuable tool to receive severe weather alerts. Residents can sign up for the service by visiting the Winneshiek County Emergency Management & 911 Communications Center's Facebook page and clicking the "sign up" button. Warming Centers and Low-Cost ResourcesAlthough the county does not currently have a set list of warming shelters, Snyder pointed out that these are typically only opened during prolonged power outages. The opening of shelters is dependent on volunteer availability to operate them. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and, if necessary, seek shelter with friends or family. For those facing challenges with heating their homes during this extreme cold, Northeast Iowa Community Action is a helpful resource. The organization offers various programs that assist low-income families with heating costs and other emergency needs. Snyder urged residents in need to reach out and inquire about available resources. Emergency Preparedness TipsIn addition to staying informed, Snyder emphasized the importance of personal preparedness. "Check on your neighbors, especially the elderly," he said. "Make sure they are staying warm and safe." Here are a few additional tips for residents to stay prepared during this cold snap: Have an emergency kit: Keep a three-day supply of drinking water, non-perishable snacks, blankets, and extra clothing in your home and vehicle. Cell phone battery backup: Ensure you have a charged backup power bank for your phone. It's essential to have extra battery life in case of emergencies. Protect your pets: Remember your pets during these extreme temperatures. Make sure they have access to drinkable water and proper shelter to stay warm.
