Women Landowners Unite to Tackle Water Quality Concerns

DECORAH — On Monday, January 27, the Winneshiek-Howard Women, Land, and Legacy (WLL) Chapter, in collaboration with the Regenerating Soil and Community Project Team, hosted a "Coffee and Conversation" informational meeting for women landowners. The event focused on discussing concerns about drinking water quality, specifically how to address those issues and collaborate with other women landowners. The session covered how to get drinking water tested from a private well, funding opportunities for sealing old, unused wells, the latest research on drinking water contaminants, health concerns related to water quality, and other water-related information. Doug Groux, the Winneshiek County Sanitarian, attended to explain grant opportunities available to private well owners for maintaining their wells. He also answered questions about water safety. "Every year, the Iowa DNR sends grant funds to each county to help private well owners. The grant helps with water testing to ensure private well water is safe to drink, well closure to prevent contamination from abandoned wells, and well repair or reconstruction to bring wells up to current standards," Groux explained. Decorah relies heavily on groundwater for its drinking water, which can be vulnerable to contamination from nitrate, Coliform bacteria, and E. coli. This is especially true in areas where agricultural runoff from nearby farms meets local aquifers. High nitrate levels in drinking water can pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups. Some of the primary reproductive health concerns linked to high nitrate concentrations include: Methemoglobinemia ("Blue Baby Syndrome") This condition affects infants under six months old who drink water with elevated nitrate levels. Nitrates can interfere with the blood's ability to carry oxygen, resulting in a bluish tint to the skin due to oxygen deprivation. Severe cases can be life-threatening. The EPA and World Health Organization have established a safe limit of 10 mg/L nitrate-nitrogen in drinking water to prevent this condition. Potential Cancer Risks Long-term exposure to high nitrate levels has been associated with an increased risk of certain cancers, particularly stomach and colorectal cancer, as well as bladder, ovarian, and thyroid cancers. Other Health Effects Nitrate exposure may exacerbate existing health conditions, such as heart disease or anemia. While pregnant women may also be at risk, the primary concern is for infants, who could also experience other birth defects including Spina Bifida, limb deficiencies, and cleft palate. Coliform bacteria and E. coli in drinking water suggest contamination by disease-causing microorganisms from sewage sources, such as Salmonella, which can pose serious health risks. Treating, and Testing, Water The City of Decorah closely monitors nitrate levels in its water supply and has plans in place to treat the water if levels exceed safe thresholds. One method of treatment is reverse osmosis, which can remove nitrates from drinking water. While Decorah's public water system generally provides safe drinking water, residents who use private wells should regularly test their water, especially during the warmer months, when nitrate levels tend to rise. Sophia Campbell, a member of the WLL chapter and the event's facilitator, strongly encourages private well owners to have their water tested regularly. "Many rural communities haven't yet taken advantage of the county sanitarian's free annual water tests," she said. "It's crucial to know your water quality, especially if you're not on city water. It's free, and it's your responsibility." Residents on Decorah's public water system are also encouraged to contact the local water utility to inquire about recent water testing results and whether there have been any recorded issues with contaminants.
