Study Reveals Iowa Cycling and Trails Generate $1.4 Billion for Iowa's Economy

DES MOINES — Cycling and trail use has a $1.4 billion economic impact annually in the state of Iowa, with $7.1 million generated in Winneshiek County, says a new study released by the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. The study, titled "The Economic Impacts of Cycling and Trails Study," was released in late January at the Coalition's Bike Banquet, following the annual Iowa Bike Expo in Des Moines. Conducted by Scioto Analysis and supported by more than 30 local organizations, the study reveals that approximately 900,000 Iowans use the state's 2,000 miles of multi-use trails each year. The study highlights the economic, workforce and health benefits cycling brings to the state of Iowa. It also takes a closer look at five case-study communities: the City of Jefferson and Greene County, Mason City, Marshalltown, Wabash Trace Nature Trail Communities, and Decorah. Each case-study community was acknowledged when the study debuted during the Bike Banquet, receiving a topographic wood map of their respective community from the Coalition. The Iowa Bike Coalition works to promote safe and enjoyable cycling in Iowa through education, events, policy and growing a community of supporters. The annual Iowa Bike Expo is one of the Coalition's largest events, hosting 120 exhibitors and 5,000 attendees. This year's Bike Expo exhibitors included Visit Decorah and Toppling Goliath Brewing Co., both working to showcase Decorah and Winneshiek County offerings to the state-wide audience. During the event, the "Visit Decorah" booth engaged with more than 730 enthusiastic cyclists, thanks to additional representation from Decorah Parks and Recreation and Luther College.
