WINNESHIEK COUNTY — The Winneshiek County Community Foundation has announced the establishment of the Riehle Family Scholarship Fund, created to honor the memory of Phyllis Riehle, a devoted school bus driver for South Winneshiek Schools and a cherished member of the Spillville community. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a South Winneshiek High School graduating senior who demonstrates financial need, maintains a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and shows a strong passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs. Phyllis's nearly three decades of service as a school bus driver left an unforgettable mark on the community. She was not only a trusted driver but a caring and constant presence for the children who rode her bus. Those fortunate to have her as their driver have fond memories and many stories of her kindness, humor and dedication. Phyllis loved every one of her 29 years behind the wheel, building meaningful connections with her riders and their families. Her collection of toy school buses—many gifted to her by her riders—was a testament to the special bond she shared with her community. Her son, Richard Riehle, established the scholarship on behalf of the Riehle Family to honor her legacy of hard work, perseverance and love for the people of Spillville and beyond. The scholarship was initially created using funds from Phyllis's estate, ensuring her memory and values continue to inspire and support future generations. "The Riehle Family Scholarship Fund is about more than academic achievement," said Richard Riehle. "It's a tribute to my mother's unwavering dedication to the children and families of her community. We hope this scholarship reflects her spirit and helps students pursue their dreams while embracing the values she held dear." The family aims to grow the fund to provide an annual scholarship of $4,000 through the South Winneshiek "Dollars for Scholars" program, ensuring lasting support for local students in their pursuit of higher education. How to Support the FundThe Riehle Family Scholarship Fund accepts financial gifts of cash, checks, or stock through the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, located at 3117 Greenhill Circle, Cedar Falls, IA 50613. Checks should be made payable to the "Riehle Family Scholarship Fund." Contributions can also be made online through the Community Foundation's secure website at www.cfneia.org/donations/riehlefamily.
