Celebrating National Dentist Day: Dr. Janet Boyes Finds Home in Decorah

National Dentist Day is March 6, offering a great day to show appreciation for these professionals and a reminder to schedule a checkup. More than 60 people are employed in dental services here in Decorah, with talented professionals located at Dental Associates of Decorah, Moellers & Moellers Family Dentistry, NEIA Pediatric Dentistry and West Side Dental. Decorah's newest dentist, Dr. Janet Boyes, joined the team at West Side Dental last summer. She is an alumna of Luther College (2009) and a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics. Before moving to Decorah, Dr. Boyes spent nine years working as a dentist in Spirit Lake, Iowa. On National Dentist Day, people may see a few fun promotions for Dr. Boyes around town, as she was the recipient of a Decorah Area Chamber Gala Live Auction package, which promised to 'make someone famous.' The package—purchased at the 2024 Gala by dentist Dr. Lana McDermott—included a radio interview, a social media feature, acknowledgment at Pulpit Rock Brewery (West Side Dental's neighbor), and recognition at three dining establishments. McDermott chose Boyes since she was a new resident and new colleague. Boyes' story will resonate with many graduates of Luther who found their way back to work in Decorah as professionals. When asked why she pursued dentistry, Boyes shared, "Being a dentist gave me the opportunity to master careful and intricate work that was also purposeful. People don't always think of it that way, but for me, dentistry is a combination of art, science, and service. I feel lucky to do this work, and it's very rewarding to help patients' achieve their oral health goals." Dr. Boyes has been a long-time fan of the Decorah community, and her family is pleased to now be residents. Dr. Boyes and her husband, Seth, and their daughters, Gwen and Lena, are quick to appreciate what the Decorah area has to offer. "I have enjoyed coming to Decorah since I was a child," says Boyes. "The time I spent in and around the area as a young person going hiking, fishing trout streams and enjoying the local businesses had a profound impact on me. I chose to attend Luther College in large part because of the community of Decorah. I was so excited when the opportunity to move back to Decorah presented itself. I love the culture, the landscape, the vibrant downtown, and the good friends I have made here. Moving to Decorah felt like coming home."
