Community and Focus: An Interview with President Brad Chamberlain

DECORAH — Luther College embarks on a new administrative chapter as it welcomes former provost Brad Chamberlain as its 12th president. After over two decades at Luther, Chamberlain's journey from instructor to president has been both inspiring and transformative. In a recent conversation with DecorahNews.com, he shared insights into his leadership approach and personal reflections on the future of the college. A Journey in Community Chamberlain first arrived at Luther College in 2001 on a one-year teaching position while completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University. His decision to join the college was because of his wife, Julie, who graduated from Luther in 1996. "Julie had such a powerful undergraduate experience here, and I had become extremely familiar with the Luther community through her," Chamberlain said. Chamberlain's calling to Luther was "absolutely confirmed" upon beginning his initially limited teaching position there. "At Luther, we talk about experiential learning for students, but Luther also creates spaces for staff and faculty to learn," he expressed. "I've been able to step into campus-wide projects and administrative roles, and I was given the grace and the support to be able to learn and discover in each of those spaces." For Chamberlain, these experiences highlighted Luther's commitment to education and the importance of learning from one another. "When I talk about everybody at Luther being an educator, that's where that comes from," he said. "We are all here to learn and all here to be educators." A Vision for Community As President Chamberlain settles into his new role, he has made one thing clear: his leadership will center around community and focus. "One of my focus words is 'community.' The work we are called to do at Luther is so profound that it has to be a collective effort," he explains. "In order to make it a collective effort, we're focusing on connecting individuals within the community, connecting Luther to Decorah, and connecting alumni to the college in new and meaningful ways." Equally important to Chamberlain is the word "focus." He emphasizes the prioritization of what will have the greatest impact on Luther's future. "There are so many things we could do, but not all of them will impact our well-being as an institution in the same way. We're focused on the things that will help us thrive in this moment," he says, adding that the college must be flexible and ready to adapt as new information presents itself. Building on the legacy of outgoing President Jenifer K. Ward, Chamberlain is grateful for the foundation she helped establish, including a strategic roadmap, a dedicated leadership team, and generous support from alumni. "Working with her through a global pandemic showed me how we can successfully navigate a multitude of challenges," he reflects. Key Initiatives One of Chamberlain's priorities is the ongoing revision of Luther's mission statement. "Our prior mission statement was really powerful," he says, "but this revision process is helping to create a sense of focus and identity so that we all know what we're striving for. Our mission is not changing, but we're trying to clarify it and make it a tighter statement that more people can easily remember and articulate." As for the future of academic programs and student experiences, Chamberlain's primary focus is adapting to the evolving academic landscape. "We've recently adapted our general education curriculum to increase experiential learning opportunities that support career discernment. We've created new academic programs in response to student interest and marketplace trends," he says. "We are also focusing on the student experience, both inside and outside the classroom. Through it all, we will maintain an experience that encourages exploration and discovery, which I find to be a hallmark of a liberal arts education and something that Luther does particularly well." Chamberlain's commitment to supporting students is further demonstrated in the renovation of the Gerdin Fieldhouse. "The renovated facility will provide better venues for competition but also spaces for students—whether or not they are student-athletes—to connect with each other and build lifelong friendships," he says. "Athletics at Luther is about community, character, and competition. This facility will be a place where students can set goals, work hard, and support each other." Filling key administrative roles, including the next provost, also remains a priority. "I look forward to partnering with a new provost who will bring energy and innovative ideas aligned with Luther's mission," Chamberlain said. "We are looking for someone who is a collaborative, creative, and curious leader; someone who shares our pride... And will be an integral member of our community." The Role of a Liberal Arts Education Chamberlain recognizes the challenges and opportunities in higher education, particularly as pressures mount on colleges across the country. However, he remains optimistic about Luther's mission and ability to thrive. "Our alumni community is particularly engaged and passionate," he points out. "Our Decorah community is particularly engaged and passionate. When I talk about a Luther education being a transformation, not a transaction, that's where that comes from. You know you have a transformational environment when people want to keep connected to it." Looking beyond Luther College, Chamberlain also sees a larger role for small liberal arts colleges in the evolving landscape of higher education. "A liberal arts education teaches students the power of ideas," he says. "It teaches them how to understand, connect, and activate ideas, as well as how to appreciate multiple perspectives. In increasingly complex environments, you need people who are fluent in navigating ambiguity. That's what makes us so well-suited to prepare individuals to lead through adaptive challenges in today's world." Personal Reflections and Looking Ahead When asked what it means to him personally to serve as president, Chamberlain's answer is heartfelt. "My wife, Julie, and I are humbled and grateful for the calling to serve Luther. This community has meant so much to us. In many ways, my story is another Luther story. I have been shaped, supported, and inspired by thousands of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and members of the Decorah community. We are honored and excited to begin a new chapter in the Luther story." As he looks to the future, Chamberlain is focused on building pride, strengthening community, and inspiring belief in Luther College. "In five years, I hope we will have created deeper connections between Luther College and its stakeholders," he says. "We'll focus on addressing challenges related to access, affordability, accountability, sustainability, and differentiation. The challenges are great, but so are the opportunities."
