Music, History, and Heritage: Sons of Norway to Spotlight Ole Bull

DECORAH — The Sons of Norway Valdres Lodge will meet Tuesday, April 15, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 701 Iowa Ave., with a presentation by Dr. James Griesheimer titled "Ole Bull: Norway's Great Violin Virtuoso." Ole Bull (born Feb. 5, 1810, in Bergen, Norway; died Aug. 17, 1880, on Lysøen Island near Bergen) was a Norwegian violinist, composer, and nationalist known for his distinctive performance style. He was also known for founding a short-lived utopian settlement in Pennsylvania called New Norway, or Oleana. Bull gave thousands of concerts during his career, including a performance in Decorah at the Steyer Opera House. He also mentored Edvard Grieg, one of Norway's most celebrated composers. Griesheimer, a former Fulbright scholar and professional oboist, is associate professor emeritus of music history at Luther College. A native of Ohio, he was ordained as an Episcopal priest in 2010 and serves as pastor at Grace Episcopal Church in Decorah. He is a published scholar, licensed pilot, former radio announcer and frequent lecturer. Former students have praised his deep connection to music and his engaging presentation style. The lodge meeting begins at 7 p.m., followed by Griesheimer's presentation at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Attendees do not need to be of Norwegian ancestry.
