Luther Baseball Honors Lewis Lechtenberg with Vs. Cancer Tradition

DECORAH, Iowa—Luther College's annual Vs. Cancer baseball game has always been more than just another date on the schedule. But this year, it carried even deeper meaning as the Norse community honored the life and legacy of Lewis Lechtenberg—a young fan, honorary teammate, and unforgettable spirit—who passed away in June 2024 after his brave battle with a rare brain tumor. Before the first pitch of the doubleheader against Central College, the crowd stood still under bright blue skies. The national anthem, sung by Ellie Lindmark, gave way to a tribute that resonated far beyond the field. Lewis's three siblings—Brinley, Eloise, and William—took the mound and threw out the ceremonial first pitch. As they did, Luke Bryan's "Knockin' Boots"—Lewis's favorite song—played over the speakers, just as it has before every home game this season. The Norse won the opener 12-8, powered by a five-run fourth inning and a strong performance from Brendan Scoonover in relief. They dropped the second game 11-6 but left the field with more than a box score to carry forward. The doubleheader brought Luther's conference record to 6-9, tying them for fifth place in the league at 10-18 overall. A Life That Left a MarkDiagnosed at 18 months old, Lewis spent years undergoing surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy—but never let any of it define him. He was a constant presence at Luther practices and games, often seen riding the dragger, sitting in the dugout, or joining team huddles. Dressed in cowboy boots and his Luther baseball jersey, Lewis became more than an honorary member—he was family. Since joining the team in 2019, Lewis's bond with the Norse grew deeper each year. He traveled with the team, joined celebrations, and even played a role in a special Norse game at the Field of Dreams in 2022. His first ceremonial pitch in 2019 became a yearly tradition, one that continued this year in his memory. A Game That Gives BackThe Vs. Cancer game has been a Luther tradition since 2017, raising funds for cancer research and, now, for the Lewis Lechtenberg Family Foundation. The foundation supports families in Northeast Iowa facing similar challenges—carrying on Lewis's legacy of strength and service. Lewis' spirit continues to shape the team. His motto—"Be happy, be brave, be strong, and eat steak"—is more than a catchphrase. It's how the Norse play, how they live, and how they remember. For Luther baseball, this game was never just about wins and losses. It was about love. It was about #TeamLewis.
