DECORAH -- On Saturday, May 24, from 10 a.m. to noon, the Friends of the Decorah Hatchery invite people of all ages to attend the return of the Goosechase! This scavenger hunt-inspired event uses a free, web-based app to engage teams in competitive missions. Teams explore and learn about the hatchery and the natural environment of the Driftless region. Snacks and prizes will be provided. Last fall, the Friends Group piloted a Goosechase event where 23 teams and almost 100 participants competed to answer trout trivia, boast the best fish face, identify geological features, and complete other hatchery-driven missions. The Memorial Day Goosechase will kick off a season of Goosechase events at the hatchery for folks to get involved with all summer. Goosechase events are a collection of missions that participants complete for points and share over a live stream. The missions can involve taking and posting photos and videos, answering questions via text, and mapping locations via GPS. For example, a mission might ask a participant to take a picture of a specific type of plant, make a sculpture with found objects, or take a video of the coolest bird they see and mark the location with a GPS. Entries are then shared in a live stream for all participants to see. The hunts are built for all ages to participate in and enjoy. It's a great way to spend time as a family or get outside with friends. Plans are underway to hold a sponsored event chase once a month this summer, where teams can compete for prizes. In addition to the sponsored events, the Hatchery's summer teaching intern, Emily Neal, will be working on ongoing Goosechase experiences that any visitor to the Decorah Hatchery can enjoy all season long.
