Allamakee County Veterans Open Museum Exhibit

ALLAMAKEE COUNTY, Iowa—A special exhibit on the War in the Pacific during World War 2 will open Memorial Day weekend at the Allamakee County Veterans Museum. Included will be the major battles from Pearl Harbor in 1941 through the Japanese surrender in 1945. The exhibit includes uniforms, weapons, and equipment used by both American and Japanese forces. Videos including combat footage from battles will be shown continuously during the day. An additional exhibit will honor those Allamakee County soldiers, sailors, marines, and air crews who were killed in action or were POWs in the Pacific during the war. One was on the Bataan Death March and another was on the USS Juneau with the 5 Sullivan brothers. Those to be honored are: Lawrence Anderson USN Russell Johnson USMC Charles Bloxham USA Gustave Kerndt USN Robert Carpenter USAAF Clement Keenan USA Kenneth Casey USN Robert Kneeland USAAF Robert Christ USN Dale Laughlin USAAF Victor Damon USMC Donald Lawson USA Roland Erickson USN John McCurdy USN LaVerne Fink USAAF Francis McDougal USN James Hagen USAAF Donald Ollof USA Arthur Hanson USN Harry Pierce USN Earl Hermanson USAAF James Rikos USN The museum will be open for tours Friday, May 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Monday, May 26, from noon to 4 p.m. There is no admission charge. The museum is handicapped accessible. The exhibit will remain available for viewing the rest of the summer.
