Decorah Girls Tennis Punches Ticket to State

DECORAH -- The Decorah Girls Tennis team is headed to the State Team Tournament after a dominant run through Regionals. First Round Sweep Regional play began Friday, May 16, with the Vikings taking on Western Dubuque, who had defeated Osage in a preliminary match. Decorah wasted no time, securing a swift 5-0 victory. Postseason rules have match play ending once five team points are earned. Though her match was unfinished, Olivia Huinker led 6-1, 5-0 against Audrey Recker. Singles wins came from Kaitlyn Bjork, Grace Huinker, Leah Holland, Jaidyn Duvel, and alternate Dylin Thompson—all in commanding fashion. Decorah first watched Aplington-Parkersburg defeat Waverly-Shell Rock (5-2); they then took on Oelwein in Round 2. This time, as the final two matches finished within a point of one another, a 6-0 sweep advanced the Vikings to the final. Victories came from Olivia Huinker, Bjork, Grace Huinker, Holland (via forfeit), Duvel, and Klaara Short. Knowing this would be a tougher rematch, the Vikings stepped onto Luther College's indoor courts with focus and determination. Grace Huinker struck first, repeating her earlier performance with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win. Leah Holland followed quickly with the same scoreline. "Grace and Leah have been incredibly steady players this year—both have beautiful groundstrokes, anticipation, and hustle," said Coach Amanda Huinker. Meanwhile, Olivia Huinker battled A-P's Adria Neymeyer, the #7 ranked player in the state. Olivia had previously beaten Neymeyer when she was ranked #5 to earn her own current #6 ranking. This match proved just as intense. After taking the first set 6-4, Olivia jumped ahead 4-1 in the second. She held her ground in a high-level match marked by sharp groundstrokes and powerful serving, ultimately winning 6-4, 6-4. "It was an amazing battle," said Coach Huinker. "Both players had to dig deep, and Olivia did a fantastic job staying composed and aggressive." At #2 singles, Kaitlyn Bjork fell 2-6, 4-6 to Peyton Klooster, but not without leaving an impression. "Kaitlyn played a strong second set," Coach Huinker noted. "She changed up her game plan and pushed Klooster to earn every point. I was really impressed with Kaitlyn's adjustments—she proved to herself that she can be tenacious." With Decorah up 3-1, the focus shifted to courts 5 and 6. Both Jaidyn Duvel and Klaara Short won their first sets 6-2, but their second sets brought new challenges. "Jaidyn had a plan for her match," said Coach Huinker. "It's not easy to play from behind, but she stuck with her strategy, stayed aggressive and smart, and pulled through in a tough second-set tiebreaker. I'm proud of the way Jaidyn ended her set - she stayed focused and tough." Duvel's 7-4 tiebreak win secured the fourth point for the Vikings. Short was the last player on the court as doubles play would not begin until all singles were complete. "It's not easy being out there by yourself," Coach Huinker said. "But Klaara stayed composed. She had a couple of tough games, but I reminded her that the weight of the world wasn't on her shoulders— to take deep breaths and focus on one point at a time." Short responded with confidence, taking the second-set tiebreaker 7-0 and clinching the fifth and final point. With the 5-1 victory, Decorah officially joined the State Team Tournament's Elite Eight. What's NextThe Vikings advance to the State Quarterfinals and will face Dike–New Hartford this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Byrnes Park in Waterloo. "We're really excited for the opportunity to play Dike again," said Coach Huinker. "They beat us in Round 3 last year, but we're a stronger team now. We've developed as both singles and doubles players, and we're ready for the tough competition Dike will bring. The girls have worked hard for this moment, and we're going in confident and prepared."
