DECORAH — As the number of measles cases continues to rise across the country, Winneshiek County health officials are urging residents to check their vaccination status and take preventive action. While no cases have been confirmed locally, three infections have been identified in Iowa—one in May in central Iowa and two more in June in the eastern part of the state, according to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. The United States has reported more than 1,100 measles cases in 2025 as of mid-June, the highest national total in years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Measles can spread through the air via coughing or sneezing and can linger in a room for up to two hours after an infected person has left. People are contagious even before symptoms appear, which often include fever, cough, runny nose, and a red rash. According to the CDC, if a person is unvaccinated and exposed, they have up to a 90% chance of becoming infected. Complications can include pneumonia, brain swelling, permanent hearing loss and pregnancy-related risks such as miscarriage and premature birth. MMR Vaccine: Safe, Free, and Effective The MMR vaccine—which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella—is considered safe and highly effective. Two doses are about 97% effective at preventing measles; one dose is approximately 93% effective. Local and national health officials recommend the following: Children should receive the first dose of MMR at 12–15 months of age and a second dose at 4–6 years old. Adults born after 1957 should have at least one documented dose; two doses are advised for those at higher risk, including healthcare workers, college students, and international travelers. Adults vaccinated between 1957 and 1989 may have received only one dose or a less effective version. Public health officials recommend checking with a healthcare provider to determine if an additional dose is needed. While the MMR vaccine is not recommended during pregnancy, women of childbearing age are encouraged to confirm immunity before becoming pregnant. Free Vaccines Available Locally Winneshiek County Public Health, in partnership with WinnMed, offers free MMR vaccinations through the Vaccines for Adults program.
