DECORAH — On May 16, 2025, numerous veterans from VFW Post 4561, American Legion Post 135, the American Legion Riders Post 135, Howard County Veterans Affairs, and others who served directly with Gene Thorne gathered at Aase Haugen Senior Services to honor Thorne alongside his family and staff from Howard County Community Hospice. Thorne, a proud U.S. Army veteran, was a former commander of VFW Post 4561 in Cresco and a member of the Osage American Legion Riders. He worked with other local veterans to establish the American Legion Riders Post 135 in Cresco. The Legion Riders are widely recognized for their charitable work and advocacy on behalf of veterans and active service members. The ceremony, organized by Howard County Community Hospice, featured patriotic music, a certificate and other tokens of honor presented by the hospice and Howard County Veterans Affairs, stories about Thorne, recognition for the care provided by his wife, Tina, and a salute from his fellow veterans. "It was very heartwarming," said Tina. "Gene's military service was his life. He was honored to serve." Veterans enrolled in hospice care often have unique physical and psychosocial needs. Recognition ceremonies are a common part of end-of-life care, and many hospice programs connect veterans with volunteers who are veterans themselves. These volunteers play a meaningful role in recognition events. "It lets them know that they're not forgotten and that we remember what they did for our country," said Mark Grinhaug, fellow veteran and hospice volunteer. "It's always an honor to be part of it." Hospice staff receive specialized training to better understand the experiences of veterans, including military culture, and to collaborate with other agencies to ensure comprehensive care and support for both veterans and their families. "HCCH believes that veterans deserve recognition and support from the moment they enlist through the balance of their life," said Brecka Putnam, HCCH social worker. "We understand the value of bringing veterans together during this delicate time. We appreciate everyone who came out to honor Gene, and our friends at Aase for all their help with the event."
