DECORAH — Residents in northeast Iowa are being urged to prepare for a one-two punch of dangerous weather conditions over the next several days, with storms expected overnight and a stretch of extreme heat to follow this weekend. According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, another round of thunderstorms is forecast to move into the region late Thursday night into Friday morning. Some of these storms could be strong, bringing heavy rainfall, wind gusts up to 50 mph and hail up to the size of a penny. While widespread severe weather is not expected, forecasters caution that a severe storm cannot be ruled out. Looking ahead to the weekend, an Extreme Heat Watch has been issued for southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa, and parts of western Wisconsin from 12 p.m. Saturday through 9 p.m. Sunday. Heat index values are expected to soar between 100 to 105 degrees, with little overnight relief. Residents are being urged to take precautions to stay safe—especially those planning to be outdoors. Extra Tips for Staying Safe in Extreme Heat: Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Limit outdoor activity: If possible, reschedule strenuous tasks to early morning or evening. Take frequent breaks: Find shade or air conditioning when resting. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Never leave children or pets in vehicles, even for a short time.
