Potential Closure of Local Social Security Office Sparks Concern in Rural Communities

DECORAH — Concerns are mounting over the possible permanent closure of the Social Security office in Decorah after residents and local officials reported hearing the location may shut down after July 4. Mayor Lorraine Borowski said she began investigating the issue after receiving "calls from residents" who were told by office staff that the location would close next month. "I learned that officials at the office had passed on that, after July 4, it would be closed," Borowski said in a written statement. Attempts to confirm the closure have been difficult. Borowski said she tried to reach the Social Security Administration using its public 800 number but was unable to leave a message or speak directly with anyone about the status of the office. In response, she contacted the offices of U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson and U.S. Sens. Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley. Hinson's and Ernst's offices acknowledged the inquiry and said they would look into the matter, according to Borowski. She said she plans to follow up again with Grassley's office. The federal Social Security website currently lists no planned closures. The Decorah office, which previously faced closure threats several years ago, ultimately remained open with limited hours. Borowski said the possibility of losing the office entirely would be a serious blow to the region, especially for older residents and those in neighboring communities in southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. "If it does close, I believe the closest office is in Waterloo," she said, adding that such a move would impose significant travel burdens on rural residents. "I passed on that being in rural northeast Iowa—with an [aging] population—that the office serves a need for the citizens," Borowski said. "I'll continue to pursue."
