Editor, As volunteers for Citizens Climate Lobby, it has come to our attention that more than $1 billion in clean energy investments and around 9,800 new, good paying jobs for Iowans will be at risk if our US Senate chooses to eliminate the clean energy tax credits. The House version of the Big Beautiful Bill, aka Reconciliation bill, which was sent to the Senate in May, calls for cutting all, or nearly all, of the clean energy tax credits created by the Inflation reduction act. These cuts don't just affect Iowans. Nationwide, such cuts would jeopardize $400 Billion in investments and 621,000 new jobs. The vast majority of of which are in conservative, rural districts. It would also abandon our progress and innovation in clean energy. This will hurt our health, economy, environment and give away our leadership to global competitors such as China. Iowa is proud to be the top producer of wind energy and biofuels: wouldn't it be nice if we became a leader in solar deployment also? Interstate Power and Light (part of Alliant Energy), has invested over $500 million in solar in Iowa. Recent research shows that farmers benefit economically when they incorporate solar into a portion of their working fields. There are many benefits from clean energy including soil, native plants, pollinators and water systems making the land more resilient to the floods and droughts we have been seeing in the recent years. We urge Senators Grassley and Ernst to put Iowans and America first. Protect the tax credits that are revitalizing our state and building a more prosperous and healthy future for our children.
