Reminder: Tax-Free Weekend to Fall on August 1 and August 2

DECORAH — The Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce has shared an early reminder that the State of Iowa holds its Tax-Free Weekend on August 1 and August 2. Neither neighboring Minnesota or Wisconsin have a Tax-Free Holiday Weekend. The State of Iowa started a tax-free weekend in 2000. The Iowa Legislature implemented the tax holiday to stimulate the economy and provide relief to consumers. Since then, this weekend of tax relief typically takes place on the first Friday and Saturday in August. Businesses open during this time are legally mandated to participate. During this weekend, the state sales tax (6%, with an additional 1% in some areas) is waived for qualifying clothing and footwear items that cost less than $100. This exemption is often utilized by families for back-to-school shopping. The exemption is applied to each eligible item individually, even if multiple are purchased on the same invoice. Online purchases are also eligible, as long as they are ordered and paid for during the tax holiday, even if delivery occurs later.
