DECORAH — Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird faced public protest Monday morning during a private tour of Xpedition Archery, as temperatures climbed into the 80s and tensions ran high over her ongoing legal case against Winneshiek County Sheriff Dan Marx. Bird's visit, held behind closed doors, drew demonstrators from across the political spectrum to the intersection between Toppling Goliath Brewery and Xpedition Archery. Protesters held signs reading "Support Constitutional Sheriffs" and "I Stand with Dan," voicing opposition to Bird's court action against the sheriff. Reporters were turned away shortly after entering the building. Staff inside Xpedition Archery cited a need to keep "everything completely separate," instructing media representatives to put away cameras and exit without taking photos. As the protest continued, one attendee collapsed from heat exposure. Decorah Police Chief Tricia Thein, Assistant Chief Scott Herrmann and Officer Nick Matelski were among the first to respond, administering first aid with help from other attendees until paramedics arrived. The arriving ambulance temporarily blocked Bird's SUV at the intersection as she and her staff attempted to leave.
