It was a tough stretch for the Decorah softball team as Charles City handed the Vikings three consecutive shutout losses, including a postseason defeat that ended Decorah's season. The trouble began at home Tuesday, July 8, when the Comets rolled to a pair of wins in a doubleheader matchup. In Game 1, Decorah was held to just one hit in a 6-0 loss, with Charles City's Addison Ellis going the distance in the circle, striking out 16 Viking batters without issuing a walk. Clara Hjelle pitched all seven innings for Decorah, striking out nine while giving up 11 hits and six runs. Charles City jumped ahead early, scoring in each of the first four innings. Decorah's only hit came from Hjelle, while Elizabeth Bucksa stole a base in the loss. Game 2 followed a similar script, with the Vikings again being shut out—this time in a 10-0 defeat in five innings. Charles City scored six runs in the second inning to take control early. Comet Emerson Bohlen led the way, going 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs. Decorah managed three hits in the nightcap, with Clara Hjelle recording two singles and Bucksa notching the other. Hjelle also added a stolen base. On the mound, the Vikings used three pitchers: Dylin Thompson started the game but was pulled after giving up six runs in less than two innings. Jasera Tweten and Hadley Alexander also saw time in the circle. The tough week culminated in an 8-0 loss to Charles City in the opening round of the Class 4A Region 8 tournament Thursday, July 10. The postseason matchup, held in Charles City, saw the Comets complete a three-game sweep of Decorah over four days. With the loss, the Vikings closed out their season with an evenly-split 15-15 overall record, while Charles City improved to 17-14 and advanced in the regional bracket, where they later fell to Western Dubuque. Following the season-ending loss, Decorah head coach Jill Boyd reflected on the contributions of her team and the two seniors whose high school softball careers came to a close. "Tonight we thank our two seniors for all of the time and dedication they have put into the Decorah Softball Program," said Boyd. "Although tonight ended, this team has much to be proud of and a bright future ahead. We are looking forward to seeing more growth from our current players and excited to see the younger players step up into new roles.
