Decorah Schools, Luther College Formalize Preferred Admission Partnership

DECORAH — The Decorah Community School District and Luther College have entered into a new partnership offering preferred college admission to qualifying high school seniors, following board approval Monday night. Under the agreement, Decorah High School students who meet GPA and academic requirements will be granted preferred admission status at Luther College, receive early merit scholarship offers, and have access to streamlined admissions support. "We are supporting academic excellence," said Luther College President Brad Chamberlain, who attended the meeting, "this is not something we consider within all school districts, it's because of the quality of the Decorah Community School District." The program was introduced in collaboration with Luther admissions staff, who approached district leaders with the idea. According to DHS Principal Brad Hurst, the college will receive a directory-only list of eligible students each fall and provide preliminary scholarship offers by mid-October. "The biggest thing from my standpoint is just access and availability—especially for first-gen students," Hurst said. "We talked to a couple this year where Luther wasn't even on their radar. This opens up a conversation." Students with at least a 3.25 GPA and in good academic standing will qualify. Hurst emphasized that most DHS students already meet or exceed that threshold. Cronin praised the initiative as a win for both institutions. "We're honored that Luther chose Decorah. We know you're looking at doing this with other school districts, and we're happy to be the first one," he said. Board members also expressed strong support. "This is a really great idea and will open a wonderful door between the Decorah Community School District and Luther College," said Board President Cindy Goodner before the motion passed unanimously. While the agreement does not obligate students to enroll, it is expected to raise awareness of Luther as a local and financially feasible option. Hurst said the process will save time for families and simplify conversations with admissions staff, "There's financial incentive, a small scholarship just for participating, and early notification of academic awards," he said. "For a lot of kids, this makes the pathway more realistic." An accompanying 28E agreement outlining further legal details will be reviewed by the board later this year. Feed your curiosity!
