Decorah Cross Country Launches Second Sneaker Drive Fundraiser

Act now—your donation to local news ensures a brighter, more informed tomorrow. DECORAH — The Decorah High School cross country teams are holding an athletic shoe drive as a fundraiser. The teams will receive funds based on the total number of gently worn, used and new sneakers collected. GotSneakers, a social enterprise, will provide compensation for the donated footwear. Community members are encouraged to support the effort by donating gently worn, used or new sneakers. GotSneakers has developed a fundraising program that invites communities to donate from their closets instead of their wallets. The sneaker recycling initiative helps keep shoes out of landfills—benefiting the environment—while also supporting local organizations. "Last year's sneaker fundraiser was very popular, and we are excited about our second sneaker drive this year," said Decorah girls' assistant cross country coach Sarah Nowack. "We know that most people have extra sneakers in their closets they would like to donate rather than throw away. By doing so, we raise money for Decorah High School cross country and help the environment. It's a win-win for everyone." Sneakers and athletic shoes of all sizes and in any condition are accepted, although only those in fair to excellent condition will qualify for payment through the fundraiser. Non-athletic footwear is not accepted. This includes, but is not limited to, dress shoes, heels, sandals, wedges, water socks, rain boots, Crocs and other non-athletic styles. Donations may be given directly to any Decorah High School cross country runner or coach. Shoes can also be dropped off at Hibbett Sports in Decorah.
