Helping Services for Youth & Families is calling on community members to make a difference in the lives of young people by becoming mentors. The organization says now is the perfect time to expand quality mentoring friendships and opportunities, connecting more local youth with caring adults. Research shows mentors can play a powerful role in helping youth make positive choices, engage in school, and avoid risky behaviors. According to national data, mentored youth are: 55% more likely to be enrolled in college 81% more likely to participate in sports or extracurricular activities 78% more likely to volunteer regularly in their communities More than twice as likely to hold leadership roles in clubs or sports teamsYet, one in three youth in the U.S. will grow up without a mentor. Currently, 17 area youth are waiting to be matched. One of them is Elliot, a 9-year-old who enjoys taking things apart, exploring nature, drawing, and swimming. Activities can be as simple as sharing hobbies or spending time together in the community. Individuals, couples, and families can mentor, with opportunities available both in the community and at select schools. Men are especially encouraged to apply.
