DECORAH — The Decorah Vikings girls tennis team notched its second win of the week Tuesday, sweeping longtime rival Waverly-Shell Rock 9-0. The Vikings improved to 2-0 on the season, coming off a second-place finish at the Chuck Schupbach Memorial Tennis Tournament last weekend. In singles play, No. 1 Olivia Huinker absorbed her opponent's power with poise, countering with sharp placement for a 6-1, 6-2 win. No. 2 Grace Huinker mixed deft drop shots with powerful, directed groundstrokes to control the pace in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. No. 3 Kaitlyn Bjork used heavy topspin and strong serving to take her match 6-0, 6-2. No. 4 Dylin Thompson hustled for every ball and relied on smart shot selection in a 6-0, 6-3 result. No. 5 Addison Maki's steady groundstrokes and precise targets led to a 6-0, 6-2 win. No. 6 Alynne Brandel opened with a 6-2 first set, then rallied from 0-3 down in the second to win six straight games for a 6-3 victory. The doubles teams maintained the momentum. At No. 1, Olivia and Grace Huinker combined smart shot selection with pinpoint volley placement in a 6-1, 6-0 performance. At No. 2, Bjork and Thompson delivered aggressive serves and decisive net play for a 6-1, 6-2 result. At No. 3, Maki and Myla Leitz overpowered their opponents 6-0, 6-1, remaining undefeated as a duo. The junior varsity squad also had a strong showing. Competing in both singles and doubles, Isis Timm, Ava Burreson and Sofia Hageman combined for a 4-1 singles record and went 1-1 in doubles play. "We always circle Waverly on our schedule — it's a matchup that gets us focused and ready to go," Coach Huinker said. "I'm already seeing so much growth in these girls. The shots and strategies we've been working on in practice are showing up in matches, and their confidence is growing with every set. On top of that, the team camaraderie is really taking shape. Hearing them laugh and chat on van rides, enjoying each other's company, is such a reward as a coach.
