ISU Extension Offers Estate, Succession Planning Workshop in Decorah

DECORAH — Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will offer Planning and Evaluating Your Estate and Succession Plan from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 8 and Sept. 15 at Viking State Bank and Trust, 321 W. Water St. The two-session, hands-on program will help participants visualize their goals for estate, retirement or succession planning and understand the processes needed to achieve them. The workshop is designed to take the mystery out of estate planning and present options for farm business and family estate plans. Through case studies, interactive worksheets and discussion groups, participants will learn key concepts, terminology and legal issues while exploring strategies to develop, implement or update their own plans. Topics will include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, property ownership, family communication and goal-setting, estate taxes and gifting, building a professional planning team, and navigating transitions that are fair versus equal. Participants will gain a clear understanding of estate planning documents, how to estimate the size of their estate, what information is needed to create a plan, and how to choose the right people for their estate planning team. Registration is $50 per individual or $80 per couple, including a meal both nights. Walk-ins or late registrations may be subject to an additional fee.
