In Time for Fall: DPL Book Discussions Return for September

Your contribution fuels the stories that shape Decorah—make a difference today. DECORAH — Decorah Public Library is hosting five book discussions in September, open to the public. Participants can reserve a copy or join an email list by calling 563-382-3717 or emailing ktorresdal@decorahlibrary.org. The Happy Hour Book Group meets Sept. 10 at 5:15 p.m. at Pulpit Rock Brewing Co. to discuss "West with Giraffes" by Lynda Rutledge, a story about a 105-year-old man who recalls a miraculous 12-day road trip to deliver Southern California's first giraffes to the San Diego Zoo during the Great Depression. The History Book Group will gather Sept. 18 at 3 p.m. on the library's second floor to discuss "The World After Gaza: A History" by Pankaj Mishra, which reexamines 20th-century global power struggles and the disconnect between the Global North and South. On Sept. 19 at 2 p.m., the Friday Book Group will meet to discuss "Memorial Days: A Memoir" by Geraldine Brooks, in which the author reflects on grief and cultural mourning rituals after the sudden death of her partner. Speculative fiction fans can join two Zoom discussions Sept. 24. At 6 p.m., the Short Fiction Group will explore "She's Always Hungry: Stories" by Eliza Clark, a darkly comic collection of tales about human desire and hunger. At 6:30 p.m., the Speculative Fiction Book Group will discuss "The Ministry of Time" by Kaliane Bradley, a near-future tale of time travel, historical "expats" and the moral dilemmas of altering the past.
