Decorah Police Wrap Up Annual 'Fill the Squad' Food Drive with Nearly 1,000 Pounds Donated

DECORAH — The Decorah Police Department brought its annual Fill the Squad initiative to a successful close on Friday, August 23. In partnership with local grocery stores Walmart, Fareway, Hy-Vee, and the Oneota Community Food Co-op, the campaign collected roughly 913 pounds of shelf-stable food and about $100 in cash donations, all benefiting the Decorah Community Food Pantry. The initiative, which ran through August, aims to alleviate the financial pressure many families face during back-to-school season. As household budgets stretch to cover school supplies, clothing, and other seasonal expenses, access to nutritious food can become a challenge. Fill the Squad was created to help bridge that gap. "Fill the Squad was a great success this year," said Tricia Thein, Chief of Police. "This is a great opportunity for us to collaborate with the Decorah Community Food Pantry to help meet needs in the community in which we serve. We plan to continue this food drive annually as we recognize the impact of food insecurity, individually and community-wide." Thein also expressed deep appreciation for the local businesses that hosted donation boxes and the community members who contributed. "Every bit helps make a difference," she emphasized. "We really extend our appreciation to the Decorah Community Food Pantry for the work they do daily, and also to Walmart, Fareway, Hy-Vee, and Oneota Community Food Co-op for hosting our Fill the Squad boxes." While the campaign officially ended Friday, Thein reminds residents that support for the food pantry is needed year-round. "Even though our food drive is over, if anyone is interested in making a donation of either shelf-stable food or cash, they can do that directly at the Decorah Community Food Pantry, located at 110 Railroad Street in Decorah."
