Sunflower Childcare Explores the Rocks Beneath Decorah

DECORAH — Students from Sunflower Childcare Center spent part of their summer exploring the inner workings of Bruening Rock Products, Inc., during a hands-on tour Aug. 21. The visit was organized after Sunflower contacted company president Keith Bruening earlier this summer about offering students an educational experience. Bruening welcomed the idea, saying it was a great way for local businesses to support one another. During the tour, students got a close-up look at the company's yard operations, including a rock wash plant and the process of cleaning and sorting material. They also watched a demonstration of how heavy haul semi-trailers are assembled, saw how equipment piles rock and sand, and visited the lab where products are tested for state and federal approval. Teachers accompanying the students included Ms. Regina, Ms. Brooke, Ms. Sue, Ms. Bella, Ms. Koryn and Ms. Maddie. Several Bruening Rock Products employees—Dennis Kleve, John Courtney, Josh Graves and Marcus Lansing—helped guide the tour and demonstrations. "Overall, it was a wonderful day, and the kiddos were very happy with the tour and demonstrations. We hope to make this a yearly event," staff said.
