DOT: Black Hawk Bridge Could Close as Early as October 15

LANSING, Iowa — Drivers who rely on the Black Hawk Bridge connecting Lansing, Iowa, to Crawford County, Wisconsin, should prepare for a major change as the bridge could close as early as Oct. 15, 2025, for demolition. Iowa DOT District Engineer Clayton Burke said no official closure date has been set. "First, we have to prepare demolition plans for the existing bridge and have them approved by several stakeholders," Burke said. "The earliest the bridge could close for demolition is Oct. 15 of this year." Once the bridge closes, traffic will be rerouted south to the Marquette/Prairie du Chien crossing, about 35 miles away. The DOT is also working to establish a car ferry service near the current bridge to provide a more direct crossing during construction. The existing bridge will remain closed until the new structure is completed. Burke said the goal is to have the new bridge open to traffic by mid-2027.
