A lifelong resident, Carlson brings deep community ties to the race. Carlson served on the Decorah City Council from 2015 to 2021, giving him six years of experience with the challenges and opportunities facing the city. In addition to his service in city government, Carlson has been a special education and social studies teacher in the Decorah and North Winneshiek school district since 2016. "I've known a lot of our residents for most of my life and will do my best not to let them down," Carlson said. "Decorah has given so much to me and my family, and I want to give back by serving as mayor. My goal is to ensure that our city continues to be a place where families thrive, businesses grow, and neighbors support one another." Carlson holds undergraduate degrees from the University of Iowa and Upper Iowa University, and postgraduate degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and Upper Iowa University.
