Decorah Tennis Players Capture NCTC Team Championship

DECORAH — The Decorah Girls Tennis team had a clean sweep, winning 1st in every singles and doubles position in the North Central Tennis Conference Meet on Saturday, August 31. Held in round robin fashion, the meet has all players compete against those of like position; teams score points based on their place finishes in each position. The Vikings dominated all around. First place finishes were secured by Olivia Huinker (#1 singles), Grace Huinker (#2 singles), Kaitlyn Bjork (#3 singles), Addison Maki (#4 singles), Myla Leitz (#5 singles), Alynne Brandel (#6 singles), O. Huinker/G. Huinker (#1 doubles), Bjork/Maki (#2 doubles), and Leitz/Brandel (#3 doubles). Along with varsity's success, JV players also had the opportunity to compete, facing JV opponents from Osage and Waverly as well as playing matches amongst themselves. The experience gave them valuable match play, helping them continue to grow their games and demonstrate the hard work they've put in during both the offseason and this season. "It's so rewarding to see the girls' hard work paying off," said Coach Huinker. "The progress they've made—whether they're at the top of the lineup or just starting out—shows how much time and energy they've invested into this sport." What stood out just as much as the victories was the team's spirit. Players could be seen lining the courts, cheering, and encouraging one another from start to finish. Their energy was contagious, creating an atmosphere of excitement and positivity that lifted the entire team. At the end of the day, the Vikings earned a total of 45 points to secure the Conference Championship title; Waverly-Shell Rock finished second with 32 points; Osage, third with 25 points; Oelwein, fourth with 24 points; and Charles City, fifth with 7 points. Decorah High School Associate Principal and Activities Director Adam Riley reflected on the tournament and the efforts the players that culminated in a "great day of tennis on a beautiful day."
