DECORAH — The Humane Society of Northeast Iowa (HSNEI) has hired Dr. Christina Karels, DVM, as Medical Director and Staff Veterinarian. Dr. Karels brings seven years of experience in mixed animal practice and will oversee medical policies, procedures, and the Wellness Center renovation, which will expand the veterinary room into a medical suite with a sterile surgery room. The Wellness Center is expected to open by late fall and will provide affordable, accessible veterinary care with a focus on wellness and preventative services. Dr. Karels said, "I'm honored to be joining HSNEI and excited to bring my experience and passion for animal care to this amazing team. It's an incredible chance to be part of something impactful and meaningful. I look forward to making a positive impact in the lives of the pets and families HSNEI serves." She chose HSNEI to balance family life while giving back to the community. The Wellness Center renovation is supported in part by The MICCIO Foundation, which funds initiatives to improve animal well-being in Iowa. HSNEI is a private nonprofit governed by a volunteer board. It does not receive government funding or support from national organizations. Operational funding comes from donations, grants, special events, adoption and service fees, and payments from local governments.
