The fire, the vote, the triumph — when it happens, Decorah News shows up. Support us being there. To the Editor, Decorah is on the verge of something transformative. The proposed recreation complex—featuring new ball diamonds and pickleball courts—isn't just a local upgrade. It's a regional magnet. Done right, it can draw athletes, families and visitors from across Iowa and beyond, bringing with them energy, visibility and economic growth. These aren't niche sports. Baseball, softball and pickleball are booming, and Decorah has the chance to become a hub for tournaments, leagues and community events. That means hotel bookings, restaurant traffic, retail sales—and a stronger tax base for everyone in Winneshiek County. Yet despite this clear potential, the county board of supervisors has hesitated to invest. This isn't the first time long-term opportunities have been passed over, and it's frustrating to watch history repeat itself. Especially when many non-Decorah residents already use the city's parks and recreation resources—for free. Let's be honest: Decorah is the economic and cultural engine of Winneshiek County. It always has been. Voting against Decorah out of local rivalry or misplaced resentment doesn't help Calmar, Ossian, Ridgeway or any other community. In fact, it hurts them. When Decorah thrives, the county thrives. When it stagnates, we all lose. Commitng county funds to this project is not a handout—it's a smart investment. One that pays dividends in tourism, community pride, and future opportunites. Let's stop missing chances. Let's build something that benefits all of us.
