Teen Leadership Retreat Empowers Youth with Essential Skills for Success

DECORAH — Thirty teens gathered for the annual 4-H County Council Teen Leadership Retreat at Pine Bluff 4-H Camp, where they identified personal leadership skills, strengthened communication abilities and expanded their peer networks as 4-H ambassadors. The retreat was designed to inspire participants to become "Beyond Ready" as the next generation of leaders. Teens had opportunities to network with peers from across Region 5 counties while also taking part in camp activities. Participants completed a series of team-building challenges designed to foster collaboration, trust, decision-making and problem-solving. The hands-on activities required them to work together, set goals, navigate group challenges and celebrate team successes. Team-building challenges and group discussions focused on three core elements of effective leadership: Qualities of a leader — Youth explored the traits that define a strong leader and identified how to embody them in their personal and professional lives. Communication skills — Teens learned about the importance of active listening, practiced sharing their voices and engaged with others. Organizers emphasized that when everyone leads, change happens. Personal leadership development — Participants reflected on their strengths and growth areas as leaders, building life skills to help them succeed in the workplace and community. They also began initial plans for project workshops and events for the 2025-26 4-H program year. In addition, the group completed a service project by gathering supplies to create birthday cake care packages. Teens combined resources to pack 40 kits, which will be distributed to local schools and food pantries. Participants also learned about state and national 4-H opportunities available beyond the local club and county level.
