Letter to the Editor - Once Again

Dear Editor, Once again, Supervisors Mark Vick and Steve Kelsay have shown the people of Winneshiek County that they are allergic to common sense investment in our future. I have grown very fond of the area and visit often, even considered a move to the area. It kills me to see their refusal to support the Decorah Recreation Complex. It is not fiscal conservatism—it's shortsightedness at its worst. The Recreation Complex isn't some frivolous luxury; it is a vital investment in health, community and economic growth. Surrounding counties and towns are outpacing this beautiful area precisely because those other counties understand that projects like this attract families, boost local business, and improve the quality of life for everyone. Vick and Kelsay would rather posture about "tight budgets" while ignoring the long-term returns that a project like this would generate. Their no-vote is not about protecting taxpayers—it is about clinging to an outdated mindset that leaves Winneshiek County standing still while the world moves forward. They had an opportunity to be partners in building something positive, forward-looking, and beneficial to the children and grandchildren of Winneshiek County. Instead, they chose to sit on their hands and say "no" to progress and future returns. Voters should not forget this failure of leadership. Next year, when election time comes around, the people of Winneshiek County must remember exactly who stood in the way of opportunity and who refused to invest in our county's future. At some point, you have to decide: do you want leaders who only know how to slam the brakes, or do you deserve leaders who can see the road ahead and actually drive you there?
