Iowa Conservation Leader Paul Johnson's Writings Collected in New Book

DECORAH — Curt Meine, editor of "We Can Do Better: Collected Writings on Land, Conservation, and Public Policy" by Paul Johnson, will give a presentation and Q&A followed by a book signing at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at The Landing Market, 211 College Drive in Decorah. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The free event is sponsored by the Johnson Center for Land Stewardship Policy and the Oneota Valley Literary Foundation, along with several conservation groups, with support from The Landing Market and Dragonfly Books. "We Can Do Better," published by Ice Cube Press, brings together the writings of Iowa farmer, conservationist and policymaker Paul Johnson (1941–2021). Johnson, remembered as a leader in the sustainable agriculture movement and co-creator of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University, wrote extensively on the connection between farming and conservation. Meine, a longtime friend of Johnson and biographer of Aldo Leopold, collected Johnson's writings and contributed a biographical introduction. Meine is a senior fellow with the Aldo Leopold Foundation and the Center for Humans and Nature, and a research associate with the International Crane Foundation.
